Studying in Cumbria or about to become a student elsewhere?I'm new to the county, how can I get involved? Firstly, welcome to Cumbria, we hope you enjoy living in our county during your studies here! It can be difficult when you move to a new place to make new friends, and find your way around your new town. We offer the opportunity for you to meet like-minded young women, make new friends and try new activities in your local area. Volunteering to work with girls such as Rainbows, Brownies and Guides can be a welcome distraction from the stress of assignments, and of course looks good on your C.V. when you graduate!
Opportunities available: Join the Senior Section If you are aged 14-25, then you can become a member of the Senior Section. (click the button to find out more about what they do.) We have a number of Senior Section units in the county, but if there isn't one near you, and you have a couple of friends who are up for it then talk to us about starting one up! You can be a member of a Senior Section group as well as being a Young Leader or an Adult Leader! Become an adult Leader If you are aged 18 years+ and are interested in volunteering to work with girls, then why not become an Adult Leader? Leaders plan and run meetings for girls, and provide residential opportunities for girls. Although meetings usually follow the schools' term pattern, we can be flexible if you're only around for the college/University semesters/terms. Some units in the UK only meet during University terms as they are totally run by students! Become a Young Leader If you're between 14-18 years old and are interested in volunteering to work with girls, then becoming a Young Leader could be just for you. Young Leaders take an active part in planning and running the weekly meetings with the Adult Leaders, and receive training on leadership skills, and can work towards gaining a leadership qualification. Volunteer for one of our adult support roles Maybe you have a skill or knowledge you can share with others? Why not think about being an adviser, trainer or supporter - someone who has a specific role in local guiding e.g. treasurer, depot helper, unit shopper etc. I'm finding studying takes up my time - I can't commit to weekly meetings, how can I stay involved? Don't worry, there are many ways you can still be involved! Below are just some of they ways you can be involved with guiding: Become a member of Girlguiding UK. If you're 18+, you can become a member of Girlguiding UK so you can keep in touch with what's happening in the organisation. Click on Membership (opens in a new window) to find out more. SSAGO If you're at university you could join SSAGO (Student Scout and Guide Organisation) Lancaster students have a club, otherwise you could join as an Indie member. Join a local Senior Section group. Many are flexible and only meet every couple of weeks or keep in touch by text or email. I'm moving to another part of the country - how can I continue guiding? Speak to your Leader or District Commissioner and they will complete a transfer form for you. You can also make contact in your new home by ringing the Region office for your new location. To find out the region office details click on Address Book (opens in a new window) or ring the Girlguiding UK Join Us number on 0800 1 69 59 01. |
