Spring into Centenary Celebrations
With the weather hotting up, so have the Centenary celebrations!
The last few months have seen members of Girlguiding Cumbria South travelling to far-flung lands for their Ultimate Adventures...and got more than they bargained for along the way! We've had Arnside Guides spending World Thinking Day with hundreds of other Guides in Switzerland (home of the WAGGGS World Centre - Our Chalet),In April two girls travelled to Lapland and Finland living with huskies and sleeping in an igloo and another Senior Section member spent time in the jungles of Costa Rica, again raising funds for the Centenary Fund.
The volcanic ash cloud (remember that!) had a silver lining..and led to a once-in-a-lifetime experience for two leaders from Cumbria South who took a group of girls on a trip to Morocco hitching a lift back with the Royal Navy on HMS Albion, and Senior Section member, Katie, who had an amazing time courtesy of Girl Scouts America, when she was stranded in Houston, Texas for 10 days, when her plane was grounded on the way back from a Senior Section trip to Costa Rica!
The place to be this spring was Cartmel Priory on 10 May where over 700 members took over Cartmel for the County Centenary Celebration Service. Here's a Brownie's eye-view of the day...
"The service was to celebrate 100 years of Girlguiding UK.
The weather was dry and sunny on the day, and bus-loads of Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Senior Section from Cumbria South came to join in the procession from the racecourse to the Priory Church.
The procession was led by Dalton Town band who played beautifully, and kept the girls in time. The whole village came out to watch them march. Then the girls stood outside the church with their unit flags on show.
Canon Robert Bailey, Team Vicar of Cartmel Priory led the service, and Mrs Barbara Littlewood, Cumbria South County Commissioner welcomed everybody who took part and introduced Liz Burnley, the Chief Guide, who talked about what guiding means.
The wonderful service invited guides old and young to renew their Promise. This reminded everyone "Once a guide, always a guide!" a favourite saying of Hilda Kendall, a guide all her life, who sadly passed away last year.
When the service was finished, all the girls walked back to the Racecourse to enjoy a lovely barbecue.
It was a great celebration of 100 years of "Something for the girls" 1910, 2010, and then..." See the gallery below for lots of photos from the day!

Ambleside explored the great outdoors at their fun day in May at YMCA Lakeside - taking in some adventurous activities such as climbing, taking to the high ropes and the water, all rounded off with a camp fire and BBQ! See gallery below for photos!
Kendal Division have been very busy recently - with a 'Decades of Guiding Day' held on 19 June 2010. Guides and Brownies from across Kendal and Natland had a fantastic day experiencing guiding and British culture from every decade from the 1910's to the 2000's. See what they got up to by reading: Kendal Division Decades of Guiding Day.
But that's not all! The Young Leaders of Kendal were presented with the
Marjorie Dinsdale Banner in recognition of all the hard work they do every week with units throughout the area. To find out what the symbols on the banner mean, read info about the Marjorie Dinsdale Banner.
There's lots of events taking place over the summer - I look forward to seeing Cumbria South members at the Centenary Camp and am really excited about welcoming you all to the biggest arts event of the summer- Fusion! (of which I'm on the organising committee of!)
Don't forget - email me to let me know what your unit has been doing to celebrate the Centenary and you could be featured here!
