County round up - January 2010

Grange & Cartmel Senior Section in London

Happy New Year!

Now we are in 2010 - the actual year the organisation was founded, the Centenary celebrations are in full swing, and here's a round-up of the news from the last couple of months.

October saw Guides from around the county descend on Wembley Arena for the Big Gig. Featuring top artists such as the Saturdays, Scouting for Girls, Alexandra Burke and Tinchy Stryder who rocked the arena, the biggest screams were reserved for JLS (at this point I would have given a fortune for earplugs!!) with the crowd going wild when they took their shirts off (!)

A rather more luxurious excursion to London was the Orient Express trip on 10 October when 65 Cumbria South Leaders, Trefoil Guild members and friends enjoyed a celebratory glass of champagne and peach puree and brunch en route from Manchester to London.
Once in the Capital a coach tour and cruise on the river Thames was in order and was rounded off with a delicious four course meal with Champagne and wine on the journey back - these ladies know how to celebrate the Centenary with style!

Congratulations to Grange and Cartmel Senior Section unit who won second prize in the Senior Section category in the Plan UK 'Take a photo Make a Difference" campaign as part of Girlguiding UK's Changing the World initiative.
Their prize was to attend a Private View of the exhibition featuring their photo and prize-giving ceremony...and see some of the signts of London

On a more serious note, November saw members dealing with the aftermath of some of the worst floods for a number of years - we hope that everyone affected is in the process of getting back to some semblance of normality and our thoughts remain with you

Whilst Cumbria has been in the grip of harsh winter weather, an intrepid group of Cumbria South Leaders escaped the snow to travel to India, spending time at Sangam (one of the four World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts World Centres) and a tour round some of India's best-known tourist attractions - photos and article to come soon!

Don't forget - email me to let me know what your unit has been doing to celebrate the Centenary and you could be featured here!
