County round up - September 09

Cumbria South at Radio Cumbria

Wow! What a start to the Centenary! We'd be surprised if anyone in southern Cumbria hasn't heard that we're 100 years old!
We got off to a flying start with the county's Centenary launch party which took place on 5 September and it all snowballed from there!

Members of the county team basked in the glorious sushine at the Westmorland Show on 10 September and were busy all day with girls and potential volunteers queuing up to talk about guiding and the opportunities available - if you've joined us as a result of talking to us at the show - a BIG, BIG welcome to the county!
There was no time to pause for breath - the following night I joined the crowds at the annual Kendal Torchlight Procession - with Kendal Divsion showing 'em how it's done with a fab float showing aspects of guiding throughout the last 100 years...and following behind, what must have been over a hundred girls dancing and waving, all dressed up in fab tutus and neon outfits! I bet I wasn't the only one who sent a text to vote for the float to win!

Sunday saw us bright and early at Radio Cumbria's Barrow in Furness studio ready to talk guiding with Val Armstrong - a brilliant opportunity to promote guiding in Cumbria South. Thanks to Senior Section member, Rebecca, who talked about the fun and exciting experiences she has had whilst being a young member. (and was a natural broadcaster!) Although a little nerve-wracking being live on the air, it's always a pleasure talking to Val who, as one of our Ambassadors, supports and promotes guiding in the community.

Final event of the month was on my own doorstep in Kirkby Lonsdale, where all the units in the town plus the Trefoil Guild gathered together for an afternoon to celebrate 100 years of Guiding with specially invited guests, including a couple of Harley Davidson bikes parked up in the church (!) and entertainment from the girls...the Rainbows singing "I found a baby bumble bee" was so cute!

October looks to be just as busy - there's a trip on the Orient Express, the Centenary Big Gig in London and lots more to look forward to! If you're holding a Centenary event - tell us about it and you too could be famous on the round up page!
