Volunteering During Lockdown with Girlguiding Cumbria South
It is National Volunteer Week, so this give us a little nudge to reflect on what we have been doing as volunteers during lockdown!
We have had some amazing guiding experiences even when we are in lockdown! Our incredible team of volunteers are still offering ways for our young members to have fun and adventure from their own home. From providing crafts and activities through the post, having fun on Zoom meetings or joining in larger events such as a Virtual Camp or Online Sports Day. Guiding, and the fun and friendship it create continues in Cumbria South.
We celebrate all our volunteers this week, whether they are able to continue guiding through lockdown or not. Here are what a few of Cumbria South’s Guiders have been up to during these past few months:
Vicki N – Throughout my time in Girlguiding this has definitely been the biggest challenge but it has also been super fun and an great opportunity for us as a county, to ‘think outside the box’ in order to keep Girlguiding going throughout the pandemic. I have been involved in quite a few teams who have put together a variety of different virtual events in order to keep guiding going for both the girls and the leaders. We had hosted a virtual sleepover where over 500 girls and their families joined in with a sleepover, taking part in a variety of different activities including different crafts, challenges, games and it culminated in a live campfire sing-a-long which I hosted in my own campsite in my back garden! It was great fun with girls requesting songs and shout outs as well as watching a few skits created by another leader too. We have also just hosted our very own virtual sports day and we have adapted our own Cumbria challenge badge in order for girls to access and achieve it whilst at home. In addition, as part of the team in Cumbria South we have hosted an online training session to help support virtual guiding and I have enjoyed taking part in my local Brownie zoom sessions every week. Guiding is always here and it has been great to keep providing girls with new experiences even if we can’t meet face-to -face at the moment. We have a fantastic team of leaders here in Cumbria South and through their collective efforts we have created some really memorable moments. We can’t wait to organise the next one!
Lindsey C – We have kept busy in lockdown by carrying on our Guide meetings over Facebook putting up a variety of activities each week. We have also helped organise a virtual county camp and quirky games. With our Trefoil we had fun on a murder mystery and had a quiz night! We?ve kept ourselves busy and smiled through the adversity in true guiding style! ?
Joe C – We are continuing our Girlguiding experience through lockdown by holding our weekly meetings virtually on Zoom, on our usual day at our usual meeting time. In addition, we post weekly challenges on our private Facebook page where the girls also post any programme activities or interest badge work. We have found the girls have completed many more interest badges in lockdown than they had before. We are also about to have our new starters from our waiting list join us and a few girls move up to our virtual Brownie unit which all the girls are very excited about. We have had very positive feedback from the parents as try to bring some continuity to a very strange time in their lives. It is lovely catching up with them all each week and to hear all they have to say…… which is usually quite a lot ?
