Welcome to Operation Curlew

The curlew is our county emblem. The birds’ numbers are in decline, we would like to help raise awareness of this issue and support those who are trying to protect and revive their breeding spaces.

Operation Curlew

Girlguiding Cumbria South is planning a year of action to support the curlew through a range of events, activities, and activism to promote, support and celebrate this special bird. The year will run from World Curlew Day on 21/04/2023 (The week of our annual gathering) to a proposed special camp, in May 2024, to celebrate the county’s Golden Jubilee year.

We Would Like to Include

  • A challenge badge with a range of curlew activities
  • Craftivism opportunities to raise awareness of the curlew’s plight
  • Links with Girlguiding North West Region’s RSPB activities and RSPB camps in 2023/24
  • Links with the RSPB Curlew LIFE project which is holding activities across Cumbria and Northumberland.
  • Curlew Activity Days for Rainbows and Brownies
  • Guide and Ranger Camps
  • Unit day visits to RSPB (and other) reserves to learn more about the curlew
  • Opportunities for older girls, and adult members, to take part in RSPB conservation projects.
  • The county Golden Jubilee Curlew camp in 2024
  • Publicity for the curlew

We Need You!

We are so excited about having a whole year to celebrate the curlew and get all our members, young and old, involved. To make this happen we need volunteers to make Operation Curlew amazing!

Volunteering with your county team is a lot of fun and very rewarding. Meetings are mostly on Zoom, cutting down on travel time and costs, but for those of you unable to join us virtually there will also be face to face opportunities. As Operation Curlew will run for just over a year there will be lots of chances to get involved. Whatever your skills, interests, or amount of time you are able to give there will be something to suit you.

Volunteering opportunities

You may be interested in designing the challenge badge, running activities at one of the camps or activity days or letting us know what your girls would like to do. You might be great at admin, good at organising or have fantastic ideas on how to make these events truly girl centric. Whether you have been a leader for more years than you care to mention or are brand new to guiding we want to hear from you.

We will be holding some Zoom meetings this term so you can learn more about this project and share your ideas.
