I Promise I Will Do My Best to Make Stay at Home Camping an Amazing Experience!
Girlguiding Cumbria South Creates Virtual ?Camp at Home? Experience for over 500 members
Over a 24-hour period over 800 people joined in with Girlguiding Cumbria South?s first ever Virtual Guide Camp. All members from the youngest Rainbow to the most experienced leader along with their families joined in for 24 hours of camping fun ? all done from the safety of their own homes!
Singing, stories, crafts, colouring, challenges, laughter & friendship all took place in a private Facebook group which racked up over 200 posts from the organisers and 8.5k (& still growing) Facebook interactions as families across Cumbria South joined in the fun and shared their Virtual Camp Adventure photos, videos & comments within the group.
Fun Guiding Challenges for All
All guides were given a series of main challenges from which they could pick and choose the ones they wanted to complete ? these included making a den & then sleeping in it, making (or help prep for younger ones) a meal for your household, creating sculptures from tinfoil, designing a fantasy character, or creating a miniature world from objects in your home. The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were also asked throughout the camp to do mini challenges such as, try to tie a knot with your feet, tell a favourite joke, learn the Promise in sign language and take a video of your best Saturday night fever dance moves!
These fun guiding challenges were interspersed with other interactive activities like listening to a story about a sunflower from Taffy Thomas, Storytelling Laureate based in Grasmere, a colouring competition created by Herdy UK who also provided prizes for the best in each age group, a yoga lesson, a bedtime story, a chance to make a ?Virtual Promise? and a wealth of other interactive opportunities with the highlight for many being the campfire singalong delivered via Zoom webinar on the Saturday evening.
Guiding Light Shining Bright
In these unusual times it was amazing to see so many Girlguiding members come together for such an unusual but incredibly successful camp. Some camped outdoors in the gardens, some in their front rooms in dens and some in sleeping bags on their beds, but wherever they were they joined in enthusiastically enjoying all the fun that guiding always provides while staying safe at home.
After the final song of ?Go Well & Safely? many were asking ? when?s the next one?!?!
